On this date in 1981, New Order released their debut single, "Ceremony". It was backed by "In A Lonely Place". Neither track appeared on a regular album. "Ceremony" was included on their 1987 compilation, Substance and both tracks were added to their debut, Movement, when it was expanded later on. The single reached the #34 spot on the U.K. singles chart. A 12 inch version of the song was released in March, 1981. The Manchester, England post punk/new wave band rose from the ashes of Joy Division which suddenly ground to a halt when singer Ian Curtis hung himself. The band continues on despite the departure of Gillian Gilbert in 2005 and Peter Hook in 2007.
